Editorial Style: Swept Away

I'm sure I'm not the only vintage lover to swoon over this editorial in the November issue of Vogue. Grace Coddington brought the magic as usual, creating the perfect escape from the cold with Patrick Demarchelier's painterly photography. This is how I imagine the women of Edith Wharton's world spending the summer.

Has anyone been to The Mount, the home that Wharton designed in Massachusetts? It has been on my need-to-visit list for years. The recent demolition of the Carnegie Hall Tower apartments and the house that inspired The Great Gatsby has prompted me to be more active in supporting and protecting historical architecture.  

My Picks from Anthropologie November 2011

Beaded Felt Pencil Skirt, $298-I'm wondering if this skirt is going to be pencil shaped, as shown in the model picture, or more a-line as shown in the product picture. It kind of bothers me that the design doesn't wrap all the way around for that price, but at the same time it makes it less dressy and more versatile.

Thulean Necklace, $398-Definitely a statement piece.

Smoke Signs Blouse, $158-This blouse reminds me of the Prada Fall 2012 prints and I like the vintage vibe.

Abstract Landscape Pullover, $188-I have a thing for odd sweaters, especially ones with landscapes. I thrifted one with sheep that I'll get the nerve to show you one day.

Satin Palazzos, $228-These pants are definitely not my normal style, but I'm attracted to the color and dramatic silhouette.

Spangled Moderne Shift, $258-I love the 1920's and white dresses, so this is kind of a no brainer. 

Trace the Stars Blouse, $88-*whistles* I may have already ordered this top. I'm pretty obsessed with anything that reminds me of the dreamy night sky.  

 

Beauty Mark: Big Hair

It isn't quite the 1980's years of perms, but big, curly hair is showing up all over the place lately. We have it on the spring runways, Blake Lively has been channeling Sarah Jessica Parker, and I noticed it on Zooey Deschanel when I caught up on the New Girl this weekend. 

Might be time to bust out the hot rollers and shake things up in the air-dried waves department.

Favorite Runway Looks: Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

The Oscar de La Renta show was a little all over the place. I really wish they would have left off most of the accessories because to me they distracted instead of added to the clothing. But this is my personal taste, as I'm one of those people that appreciate delicate collar bones as something beautiful all on their own. I will admit that I'm loving the return of 1980's Dynasty style earrings.

The pleated lame dress was one of my favorite evening looks from all of the collections. And how gorgeous did my faves Jacquelyn Jablonski, Karlie Kloss, and Arizona Muse look? I liked the juxtaposition of  clean, natural makeup against wildly curly hair.

Peeking at Isabel Marant Etoile Spring 2012

The trend of mixing and matching of prints shows no signs of abating for spring. Looking forward to seeing the whole collection in color, but these are my favorite patterns so far.

Thrifting Style: Suede and Sweaters

Thrifted 1970's marled red cardigan, which looks equally great with plaids and stripes.

1940's diaphanous grey blouse found at flea market. I'll probably wear a boring camisole under this, but if I lived somewhere cool, I would wear a beautiful black corset under it and nothing else. 

Thrifted vintage rust suede bag. I love the unusual shape and that it can be used over the shoulder or as a clutch.

Thrifted 1990's boots. I've been folding down the black boots when I wear them, which looks kind of cool and kind of dorky at the same time. The brown ones are just the right height, softly square toed, and distressed to perfection.

I haven't done much thrifting lately, between being sick and spending a little too much money in retail stores. Those two things generally go hand in hand, because all you can do is surf the net and hope that the package arrives when you are feeling great again and can wear it out.

Wishlist: Marled Knits

So I'm not finished talking about marled knits, even though I've already blogged about them here, here, and here. I don't seem to be reaching for anything these days other than that vintage blue sweater and the Isabel Marant top. The scattered patterns lend themselves well to layering with other prints, as seen in the image on the left.

This past weekend I found a vintage cardigan in a red mix, which will at least give me a new color to wear.

Coral has been my newest color obsession as of late, and this coat fulfills that want perfectly. J.Crew, $398

Budget Style: Forever 21 Socks

I'm probably late to the game, but Forever 21 has some really cute socks right now! The anklet ones are a $1, longer ones are $3, and the tights are $10. The most amazing part is that they consist of at least 70% cotton (the tights are 68%), which is a rarity these days.

The Tribal tights look more expensive than they are, but I may have overstepped my twee line.
