Domino Magazine November 2008 Part II-In the Black

   

I'm not the only one falling in love with black again. Domino has not 1, not 2, not 3, but four of their stories featuring dark painted walls.

This was my favorite editorial in the issue, not surprising since it mixes fashion and home design. Decadent moody rooms and clothing that still manage to capture sparkle and light. I'm in love with the black blue wall paint, which goes well with the indigo fabric backdrop they used for the fashion shots. Photographed by Mary Rozzi.

Vogue Magazine November 2008: Natalia Vodianova

     

I bought the November issue of Vogue just for this dreamy editorial of Natalia Vodiavona, her husband, and children. I always feel sorry for those that can't see what magic exists in a forest.  Where else can you walk an invisible tightrope across a waterfall and sail through a sea of grass? Tuesday Thrifting: A Day Late

I had to help a friend yesterday and never got a chance to post. I'll try to catch up, here are the vintage clothing items I picked up this weekend:

 

Sheer cotton Edwardian top with lots of intricate detail.

 

I love the wide ruffle neck of this 70's sweater.  It reminds me of the ones I missed out on in Paris.

 

I'm not sure of the age of this vintage blouse, but I love all of the pleating and pintucks in the front. The waist nips in perfectly to show off a slender belt.

 

Vintage bulbous rhinestone clip on earrings that I'm going to use on a pair of shoes.  I also picked up vintage set of buttons to replace ones on a cardigan.

 

Plum colored vintage gloves from one of my favorite flea market sellers. I've never seen this shade before and think they will be perfect for fall.

I found The Glamourai via The vintage Society. 

I love the way she reconstructed this 1930's skirt, it reminds me of Vivienne Westwood.

 

Monday Thrifting: Golden Spoons and other home dreams

I went to the very last antique flea market of the season this weekend.  The next one isn't until April, but I have to say they went out with the bang.  The market was filled with vendors and visitors chatting and toting around their treasures.

 

I bought the first thing that I liked.  I rarely do that because I hem and haw and catalog it in my mind while I make sure there isn't anything out there that makes my heart sing. Well I heard a song and had to follow the piper to this vintage vanity table, which I bought for under $20.

Can you see her sweet little french bones under all of her distress? Her curvy front legs are doing a curtsy at me, merci madame for rescuing me. It appears the two front drawers had been mirrored, as there is some residue left behind, but has broken off.  I'm hoping to get those replaced if it isn't too expensive. In the middle I'm going to place a vintage vanity mirror that should fit perfectly in width and height.

I'm not sure yet what to do about her finish.  Do I strip her down to the wood? It looks like she originally had a black finish from what I can see where they neglected to paint just because it was against a wall. I could keep her the faded distressed seafoam blue, but I would have to make sure the rest of the room was very clean so it looks more rustic modern vs shabby chic.

   

Vintage dutch biscuit tin, I'm guessing from the 70's from the design of her dress. I love drawn girls so much and this had loads of detail, plus it is a soft grey & white.  I'm going to repurpose this to store stuff in at my desk.

House Beautiful November 2008

 

I had to post some pictures of this home from the November issue of House Beautiful. It isn't a typical color scheme for a fall issue, but that is exactly why I love it.  The interiors made me smile as I flipped through the pages, and you can tell the designers, Gene Meyer and Frank De Biasi, had fun with it too.

It is a bit more extreme then my normal style, and there is a ton of painted furniture, but this is a 1940's Miami bungalow so let it roll.  Think Golden Girls meets Jonathan Adler. The website doesn't include my favorite shot of the bedroom, and my camera unfortunately does't do it justice.

Snippet & Ink Moodboard

I wanted to thank Kathryn of Snippet and Ink for including my bridal shower invitations in her beautiful moodboard.  Snippet and Ink is a lovely site  for all of you brides to get inspiration and to see real brides bringing their dreams to life.

 

I loved Mary McDonald's invitations for a baby shower that were featured on Style Court. I used this photo as inspiration when trying to come up with invitations for my Marie Antoinette theme bridal shower.

   

I couldn't find anything ready made that I liked so I decided to make my own. I found the perfect pink card stock at Target. They carry limited colors in the store, but it is a nice weight and a great price if you can find what you want. They even include a how-to template online to make invitations. For the top of the invites I used a free scrolly design from Dafont and then printed them out using our computer.

Finding a damask liner for the envelopes was much harder and almost my undoing.  Once I get a specific idea in my mind there is no changing it and I won't settle for less. So I hunted for several weeks at any place you can think of from fancy online stationery shops to the Dollar Store. 

Mary McDonald used a photocopy of a print she loved to line her envelopes but I couldn't find anything that would fit.  One day I popped into Home Goods and while checking the wrapping paper section I noticed a pack of damask party napkins made in Germany.  They were the exact shade of blue I wanted and the paper had a pearly sheen. I thought, could these possibly work?

I had googled how to line envelopes so I had a template ready. I then had the painstaking job of separating the fragile layers of the napkins and cutting each piece out. I used a glue stick to hold the liners in place and just a ruler to create a crease where the envelope shut.  I also sealed each envelope with gold wax and my initial for extra oomph. I won't be doing that step again.

I was very happy at how they turned out and they cost the same as buying them ready made in the store.

(If you were wondering, yes I had to plan everything for my wedding, including my own shower. Half because I'm a control freak, but the other half is that both of our families can be aesthetically challenged;)
