So we are back from our trip to D.C., and I am exhausted. I am also the worst packer in the entire world. No matter how much I read up on the weather conditions and try to coordinate my wardrobe, I somehow am always thwarted by the trip goblins.
While I completely agree with Glamourai's post about packing your favorite pretties, I had been burned on my last vacation. On my honeymoon this summer the temperature which would normally be a beautiful 75 was a freakish 60. All my lovely items, my trousseau if you will, languished in my suitcase as I wore the same outfit pretty much everyday. Sadly, my favorite 7 yr old cashmere cardigan perished on the fourth day when the elbows finally gave out after being layered over so many items.
So for this trip, I thought I was smarter and packed more conservatively, especially as the events were more of a formal business nature. I picked pieces that could be interchangeable and work for day and night.
1. Issa Floating Feathers dress 2. J.Crew Victoria ruffle striped shirt 2. J.Crew Boyfriend Cardigan in Golden Cypress 4. Banana Republic black cashmere turtleneck sweater 4. J.Crew Double Serge pencil skirt in black 5. Chanel Mary Janes from F/W 08
I'm happy to say that each item was bought at a discount, and I got the Chanel shoes and Issa dress at the Saks wonderful 80% off sale. Unfortunately I didn't get to wear the pieces very much.
For dinner one night, I wore the Issa dress paired with black tights and a pair of old old old Nine West motorcycle boots with a flat lug bottom(not pictured).
For an event, I paired the double serge pencil skirt with the Victoria ruffle stripe shirt. I layered the golden cypress cardigan over the shirt and wore black tights with the Chanel Mary Janes.
1. Gap Favorite long sleeve t in a light grey heather 2. Old Banana Republic down puffer coat(not North Face as pictured) 3. Thrifted Victoria Secret ivory silk slip(similar in length to the one pictured) 4. Gap Favorite long sleeve t in white 5. Ugg classic short in grey 6. Target yoga pants
I always wear comfy cotton yoga pants to fly in, and pair them with a long sleeve tee or cami and a cardigan or wrap incase it gets cold.
As for outerwear I think everyone in the city was wearing the same black puffer jacket/Ugg combo. Not the most attractive, but it keeps you warm.
For the most part I wore the silk slip tucked into skinny jeans(not pictured), topped with both long sleeve t-shirts, and finally the cashmere turtleneck. I wore my tights under my jeans and wool socks over them. It was absurd trying to peel off all the layers every night but I'm a complete baby when it comes to the cold.
So I've tried packing all my favorites, and I've tried doing the basic wardrobe, and I think you just have to roll with the punches. If things don't work out it just gives you an excuse to shop on your vacation right?
